This area, Site of Community Importance, has been populated by the main local prehistoric folks and is enriched by many naturalistic, historical and recreational goods (among them many archeological finds, the Roman aqueduct and the Insubric Line).
SALIENT FEATURES
Besides the five lakes, there are many wetlands whose origin dates back to the last ice age, when the melt water of the glacier filled up the hollows formerly occupied by Balteo glacier, and created the current water bodies and peat-bogs (the so-called “Bouncing Lands”).
The Archaeological Park of Lake Pistono hosts many specimens of archaeological artifacts found on the banks of the lake, in display in the Exhibition Hall of Montalto Town Hall, and a full-scale reconstruction of part of the village that there existed 7000 ago.
