PATRONAL FEAST OF SAN SAVINO – IVREA

The 7th of July every year, Ivrea celebrates a festival for its Patron San Savino, a patron that never knew the city and entered it six hundred years after his death.

San Savino in fact was the bishop of Spoleto between the end of the III century and the beginning of the IV century. He suffered martyrdom during the last and most terrible persecution against Christian, that of Diocletian.

The body of San Savino remained in Spoleto for a few centuries in the basilica dedicated to him, until the son of Berengario II, marchese of Ivrea, Corrado, who governed Spoleto before succeeding his father, brought him to our city in 956. Corrado in fact wanted to give Ivrea a patron saint that would free it from the plague it was subject to at that time.

The plague, as recounted by the reported of that time, effectively ended as soon as the martyrs remains reached Ivrea.
