Marcello Nizzoli and Gian Mario Olivieri (1956)

This complex completes the residential building cycle of the Castellamonte district. The building consists of three blocks with different heights and a single façade on the West side. On the other hand, elevations are highly articulated for the diagonal cuts of the balconies and for the supremacy of vertical and horizontal components.

2018 Ivrea Industrial City of the XXth century

The Industrial City of Ivrea was built in the years between 1930 and 1960, out of the desire of Adriano Olivetti and according to a design that was meant to be an alternative to national and international experiences carried out during the XXthcentury.
The site is composed by a group of architectures associatedwith the industrial and socio-cultural project of Adriano Olivetti. It consists of an array of buildings designed by the most important Italian architects and urban planners of the XXth century; a design that is perfectly detectable in the urban weaveof the city.
The area is perceptible mainly along the axis of Via Jervis, hometo the buildings intended for production, for the factory and the city social services, and for the dwellings that are to be considered among the most important examples of the innovative approach createdby Olivetti.
The architectural heritage of the City is also a fundamental milestone in the profiling of architectural and urban planning repertoires of the late twentieth century.
Differentarchitectures that constitute the various ways in which technical cultures have tried to cope with city growth regulations and with territories invaded by industrialization processes.
In Ivrea, the Factory Culture of Olivetti and the Community Movement experience, involved, for the first time in Italy, both, architects and urban planners, with the aim of giving life to an extensive design of the city.
The ensemble of buildings that compose the industrial city of Ivrea, is a set of well-preserved buildings intended for the industry, for services and residences of exceptional architectural quality, among the most striking material expressions of a modern vision of production, conceived by the most representative Italian architects of the twentieth century and by the technicians of the factory.
Built between the years 1930 and 1960, their individualvaluelies in the marriage between the innovative capacity of expression of these modern architectures and the awarenessof being part of an exemplary economic and social project permeated by the idea of Community.
This is the underlying reason that has enabled the registration of Ivrea as the industrial City of the XXth century, on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Factory Canteen and Entertainment Centre

Ignazio Gardella (1953 to 1961) with Roberto Guiducci and UPECC.

Located in the backsideof the Officine Complex and close to the former Convent of San Bernardino, the hexagonal building is the outcome of the experimentation of the late production of F.L.Wright.

It has become an architectural icon thanks to its symbolic and social value, but also due to its concept of industrial city.

The interest of this building resides in the colored brise-soleil (sun breaker) of the façade, designed by the chief of the Technical Department of Olivetti, who used the blades of the sun breaker in various architectural proposals for factories.

They were promoted bytwo architects from Milan in various projects and studies since 1934 with the aim of shaping Ivrea, as the industrial city. The building comprisesfive square-base buildings, with six floors, covered with visible bricks. Each component is rotated with respect to the previous one, thus

creating a curvilinear path. This building is the last one of this area, and it represents the evolution of Ivrea intoa city of services to the industry in the 1960s and 1980s, characterized by a strong corporate identity policy promoted by the Company.

The Nursery was built during the War, and limitations regarding the use of iron during that period were decisive in determining choices of building materials and the embracement of a single-storey masonry bearing structure with diorite pillars. Classrooms overlooked an interior patio. Furnishingsare still visible, and they were designed by the TechnicalDepartment of the factory,orchestrated, at the time, by Gian Antonio Bernasconi.

Officine ICO (ICO Workshops)

Luigi Figini and Gino Pollini with Annibale Fiocchi, Goffredo Boschetti, Ottavio Cascio, Roberto Guiducci, Marcello Nizzoli (1933 – 1958).A portion of this building was renovated in the year 2006.

The ICO Workshops, constitute one of the world best-known industrial developments of the XXthcentury; they begin with the Red Brick Factory and proceed with the four subsequent enlargements. Designed and built for subsequent enlargements and super elevations on the way of Corso Jervis, they have hosted the Olivetti production until 1955, and after that date and until about 1997, offices and workers.

Olivetti Office Building

Annibale Fiocchi, Marcello Nizzoli, Gian Antonio Bernasconi (1959 - 1964)

The first studies date back between 1952 and 1955. The project was intended as a response to the company's increasing needs to have a headquarter, at a time of great industrial expansion, with a representative office that would have hosted the company's chairmanship.

The building has three structures, each one of which is angled 120 degrees with respect to the others, joined by a central hexagonal unit. The use of decorations on the façade and the existence of marble sculptures and prestigious finishings inside,have as an objective, to highlight the monumental character of the building according to the standards and stylistic elements of the International Style of the late Fifties. In the area behind it, the Data Processing Center is located. It was completed in 1952.

Eduardo Vittoria (1951 - 1855)

The map of this building shows four asymmetric structures that come off a central body containing a staircase. The façades have an evident chromatic effect thanks to the Klinder blue coating of tiles. The building was extended in 1965 with the project of Ottavio Cascio, and to meet new requirements, also at the end of the last century by the Technical Department of Olivetti. The last intervention was made following the project of Ettore Sottsass Jr (1999-2000) with the opening of the Interaction Design Institute promoted by Olivetti and Telecom Italy withthe Stanford University.

The Social ServiceCentre project is the result of the personal experimentation of Figini and Pollini with organic architectural designs. Albeit still of a rationalist origin. It is clear in the building the use of geometrical shapes such as the hexagon and the triangle. Originally, it was home to the library, the social and welfare services, the Infirmary, the Olivetti Child-mindingservices and the Internal Solidarity Fund.

Eduardo Vittoria (1955 - 1959)

The building was placed on a podium so to counterbalance the unevenness of the road. It consists of three buildings distributed around a central patio. It supplied electricity to the entire industrial complex. Red Klinker tiles are all along the external walls to the plants floor, while in the upper part of the thermal boiler room, the prevailing color is blue.

Originally composed by 82 simplex and duplex residential units and overlooking the hill, this building was intended to host, temporarily, Olivetti´s employees residing in Ivrea. A two-storey building with a semicircular base of about 300mt in length. This building marks the evolution of the city from being an industrial city to one of service to the industry. All of this between the seventies and eighties of the XXth century.
